Hunte Bridge closed: Chaos in rail traffic between Bremen and Oldenburg!
There's a lot going on in the Oldenburg region today, because rail traffic between Bremen and Oldenburg has been at a standstill since Friday evening, December 5th, 2025. The reason for this is a crack in the Oldenburg Hunte Bridge, which urgently needs to be repaired. The route will remain completely closed until today, December 8th, posing major challenges for many commuters and travelers in the region. From tomorrow, December 9th, trains should be able to cross the bridge again - at least on two tracks, according to the local news platform NDR reported.
The construction site is no small effort: two massive supports that are five meters high and weigh over a ton are being built into the bridge structure. These measures are intended to help resolve the already noticeable bottleneck on the Bremen-Leer route. More than 100 trains usually travel over the 70-year-old Hunte Bridge every day. An alliance of business, associations and regional institutions is pushing for repairs to be carried out as quickly as possible so that rail traffic can quickly return to normal.
Disturbances and challenges
The situation is not new: Since November 5th, the bridge had to be used with only one track due to the upcoming repair work, which led to considerable delays and cancellations. The damage was discovered during routine inspections, which revealed a crack in the supporting part of a counterweight. What is interesting is that the damaged bridge is not the Hunte Bridge near Elsfleth, which was also in the news, but has a temporary bridge.
The problems at the Hunte Bridge are not only putting a strain on rail traffic, but are also putting pressure on politicians and rail companies to find solutions quickly. The proposal to reopen the bridge a little earlier is therefore being discussed eagerly, because there is something to be done!
Outlook for the coming days
With the announced reopening of the bridge from tomorrow, many travelers and commuters are looking forward to the future. Whether the work is progressing according to plan will become clear from Monday. We will keep our readers up to date on any developments and the new timetable change, which could be a relief for many.
In the meantime, everyone affected is grateful for the patience with which they have to endure the inconvenience. After all, it is important these days that train journeys are safe and reliable.
