Young seal on the south beach: Rest please for the new star from Wilhelmshaven!
A young seal is currently causing a stir on the southern beach in Wilhelmshaven. The cuddly animal has settled there and is enjoying the relaxed atmosphere, occasionally wandering around near passers-by. However, as the police report, the seal mostly sleeps and is in a non-critical condition. So there is no reason to worry - on the contrary: the little four-legged friend just wants to be left alone.
The police therefore urge the public to give the seal a wide berth. Ultimately, the animal needs the necessary rest to regenerate itself and possibly swim back to the sea soon. “Please do not touch him or disturb him,” is the clear message from the officers. The situation is not considered critical and the seal simply got lost here from an excursion in Bremerhaven.
Exciting growth for the seal population
With regard to seals overall, the situation appears to be positive. A survey was carried out in 2025 indicating a new high of 12,064 seals. This is the best level since 2008. For comparison: In previous years, volunteers often had a lot to do, as they were called to the beaches of the North Sea almost every day during the peak season to rescue seals in distress. But this year the seal season was more relaxed as fewer animals had to be cared for.
It is important to remember that wildlife such as seals can be sensitive to disturbance. That's why it's even more important to give them the space they need to recover. While passersby are interested in the animal and perhaps want to take a photo or two, the focus remains on the request not to disturb the animal.
With the young seal, visitors to Wilhelmshaven not only have a wonderful sight, but also the opportunity to learn something about the protection and lifestyle of these great animals. So let's stick to the recommendations: keep your distance, stay calm and enjoy the experience of nature.
