Kunsthalle Osnabrück: Ghost exhibition focuses on coming to terms with the past!

It's finally here! The Kunsthalle Osnabrück opened its annual exhibition on June 21, 2025 with the fascinating theme of “Ghosts”. This show is a true showcase of creativity, immersing visitors in a world where the past and present are beautifully intertwined. And all of this in an atmospheric setting: the art gallery is located in a former Dominican monastery, which gives the exhibition a very special touch. The exhibition runs until February 22, 2026 and promises to be a place for shared learning and discussion of transgenerational issues.

The focus is on the relationship with our ancestors and the question of how their experiences and stories are passed on from generation to generation. With themes such as traditional craft techniques and transgenerational trauma, the art gallery invites visitors to explore their own memories and “hidden ghosts”. As ndr.de reports, the exhibition deals with both emotional and material aspects of the topic, with European and non-European perspectives given equal consideration.

The artists and their works

Particularly noteworthy is the installation “Epona” by artist Chaveli Sifre, which was inspired by the Celtic goddess of fertility. This installation combines cloud-like white smoke, seashells, sand paths and various scents, creating “invisible paths to memories,” according to Sifre. The artist Minh Duc Pham also made a strong statement with his installation “Never Quite Right”. It is dedicated to the Vietnamese contract workers of the former GDR and shows a sundial in the form of eight flowers, which is decorated with engravings of the contract concluded on April 11, 1980. Furthermore, Christian Diaz Orejarena devotes his work “Otras Rayas – Other Lines” to the biography of Geo von Lengerkes and addresses colonialism in Colombia.

The various works of art invite visitors to reflect on the fates and stories of their ancestors. The concept of transgenerational trauma is brought into particular focus. This historical phenomenon, in which stressful experiences are passed on from generation to generation, is not only treated in art, but also in projects such as “Hakara – Encountering Transgenerational Trauma”, which was initiated by AMCHA Germany in 2021. The initiative promotes dialogue about the intergenerational effects of traumatic memories and raises awareness of the long-term consequences of violence and persecution, as can be found on presentpast.org.

Free entry and packing station for all visitors

A special treat for the Kunsthalle’s anniversary is free entry to the exhibition and a so-called “packing station”. This is intended to help visitors to think more intensively about their impressions and thoughts after their visit. The year 2025 is all about exchanging ideas with the past and identity - a good reason to take a look at the Kunsthalle Osnabrück and immerse yourself in the world of “ghosts”.
