In a moving ceremony, the University of Osnabrück expanded its partnership with the Yuri Fedkovych National University in Chernivtsi on the occasion of their 150th anniversary. The new cooperation agreement, which was signed as a sign of support in difficult times, intensifies the cooperation between both universities, especially in the field of law. The partnership between the two universities has existed since 2020 as part of an Erasmus+ cooperation. Since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression, 13 Ukrainian students have already decided to spend a semester abroad in Osnabrück. This shows how strong the exchange continues despite the challenging circumstances. The University of Osnabrück emphasizes that this cooperation allows students to continue to gain academic experience.
Celebrations and memories
The high-ranking delegation from Osnabrück also took part in ceremonies during which a minute's silence was held for the university's employees who died in the war. Plaques with the names of war victims can be found in the city of Chernivtsi, demonstrating the university's direct connection to the current geopolitical situation. Chernivtsi itself was the target of drone and missile attacks on July 12, 2025, but the delegation did not feel threatened during their stay.
To celebrate the anniversary, Prof. Schneckener conducted a three-day block seminar entitled “Linking Security and Enlargement in times of War: The EU and Ukraine”. Over 20 bachelor's and master's students from the fields of politics, law and business took part. These events underscore ongoing academic exchange and mutual support in times of crisis like them from the University of Osnabrück be emphasized.
Yuri Fedkovych National University in Chernivtsi is the fifth oldest in Ukraine and was founded in 1875. By intensifying cooperation, both universities show that education and international partnerships are crucial even in times of crisis.
