Jules, the puzzle prodigy: champion at just 10 years old!
Small but mighty! Ten-year-old Jules from Castelginest has made an outstanding name for himself in the world of puzzles. On September 8, 2025, at the start of school after the summer holidays, the school community of the Lucie Aubrac School in the Buffebiau district remembers his extraordinary abilities. After just two years of competitive puzzle-solving, he was crowned Champion de France for under-10 competitors in June after solving a 100-piece puzzle in a fantastic 8 minutes and 10 seconds
.
But that's not all: Jules also demonstrated his skills in the adult competition and came in 29th place with a 500-piece puzzle, which was required of him in just over an hour and 30 minutes. Professionally referred to as a “cephaloclastophile,” his talent for puzzle-solving has developed rapidly since he was discovered in second grade – advice from his teacher that turned out to be spot on.
Puzzles in the pandemic
Like many children, Jules has made the most of the time during the COVID pandemic. Instead of letting boredom get the better of him, he devoted himself to puzzles and deepened his passion. Today he regularly takes part in competitions in the region and clearly achieves top performance: he solves puzzles in almost half the time that his opponents need.
His next big appearance is already around the corner: In October, Jules will defend his title at the Open de France in Aubigné-Racan, a town in the Sarthe. There he will compete in two categories – under 16 and in the adult category.
A real puzzle marathon
But that's not all the young puzzle master is planning. In addition to the competition, he will also take part in a marathon - a group puzzle with his mother for more than 7 hours. Crazy, right? He is also working on a gigantic Disney puzzle from Ravensburger with 40,320 pieces and has already assembled 28,224 pieces of the seventh scene. It will be an impressive achievement that he plans to eventually donate to a children's hospital.
The next big puzzle lesson for competitive puzzle enthusiasts will take place on June 16, 2024 in Aubigné-Racan, France. The first competition of its kind since 2000, organized by Sophie de Goncourt, a three-time world champion, and supported by the municipality and the ADSL Association, expects about 50 participants from different countries. Adults compete for the fastest time on the 500-piece puzzle, while the little ones compete against each other in several age categories. The event is a great crowd-puller and is enriched by various activities for children. Admission is also free, which gives the event an additional appeal.
Puzzles have long since become not only a relaxing activity for the whole family, but have also turned into a competitive sport. Speed puzzlers usually solve 500 pieces within 90 minutes, the best ones don't even take 30 minutes. Only those opponents who practice persistently show progress within a few weeks. There are individual and team competitions as well as non-stop puzzle events that make puzzling even more exciting. For anyone who wants to become more active in this sense, taking part in the World Jigsaw Puzzle Championship in Valladolid, Spain, in September 2024 could be an exciting challenge - everyone is invited to try their luck here!
Jules' commitment to puzzles impressively shows how much fun and community there is in this creative sport - we can only hope that his next competitions will also be as successful!
