Salzgitter starts temporary dog beach due to bridge closure!

In Salzgitter, a temporary dog beach is being set up on Lake Salzgitter to the delight of dog lovers. This measure was necessary because the pylon bridge on the lake has been closed due to construction work since June 24, 2025, which means that regular access to the dog beach on the lake island is currently not possible. The new dog beach is now located on the northwest side of the lake, between the two diving entrances, and opened on June 27, 2025. The city of Salzgitter informs about this step in a press release that underlines the urgency of this solution.

Dietrich Leptien, operations manager of the municipal management company (SRB), commented on the measures taken. Despite the erection of construction fences, it should be noted that they do not have the stability of a permanent fence. The temporary dog bathing area is expected to remain in operation until the end of July 2025, giving the dogs and their owners a nice run.

Popular meeting place for dogs

In another measure, the regular dog beach will be temporarily closed for a short period of just two days starting Monday, July 1st. The reason for this closure is to fill the sand with a total of 30 tons of new material. This speaks to the city's commitment to keeping the dog beach in a welcoming and clean condition, which is highly valued throughout the region.

What makes a dog beach?

Dog beaches are a refreshing solution for dog owners, especially in Germany, where there are almost 80 official dog beaches on the North and Baltic Seas. Most of these beaches are closed to dogs from May to September for hygiene and conservation reasons. At dedicated dog beaches, dogs can often play off-leash, which contributes to a relaxed atmosphere.

In order to optimally enjoy the day at the dog beach, dog owners should plan accordingly: accommodation, food and sanitary facilities are just as important as a short middle ground in case the dogs cross the water line after bathing in the threshing machine.

The temporary dog beach on Lake Salzgitter should not only be a quick courtesy, but also an invitation to all dog lovers to actively enjoy the beautiful summer months with their loyal companions. So it remains to be hoped that the pylon bridge will soon provide good access again and that the dog beach season can continue without any worries.
