Shortage of skilled workers in construction: How companies want to overcome the crisis!

A look at the current situation in the main construction industry shows that the number of orders has increased in some cases. This is accompanied by a slight increase in the employment rate in the construction industry, but at the same time it is faced with a serious problem: the lack of trained specialists. AZ Online reports on the difficulties of attracting qualified applicants for open positions, while the BauGPT job platform has over 1,000 offers for job seekers and more than 70,000 applicants are actively looking for jobs.

But Anna Hocker, co-founder of the platform, warns that the number of applicants does not reflect the actual availability of the positions. Particularly highly qualified positions, such as those of electronics technicians, are often difficult to fill. Hocker predicts a decline in skilled workers of around 30 percent over the next five years, which could further widen the gap between supply and demand.

Causes of the shortage of skilled workers

What is behind this shortage of skilled workers? According to the Arthemos GmbH the reasons are varied. Demographic change is not only affecting the number of people in employment, but also the attractiveness of the construction industry: many young people prefer other industries, as construction jobs are often considered physically demanding and not very family-friendly. In addition, technological change means that ongoing training is necessary, which is not offered across the board. Regional imbalances also played a role: While the need for skilled workers is high in urban centers, the situation is often completely different in rural areas.

Companies face challenges such as delayed construction projects and rising labor costs. Fewer skilled workers lead to longer completion times and drive up project costs, which poses the risk that innovative processes cannot be implemented.

Solutions

So what can be done about this deficiency? The use of international labor markets can represent a first solution. Skilled workers from Eastern Europe in particular have become more important. With flexible working hours and modern working conditions, companies can become more attractive to applicants. Innovative solutions, for example through cooperation with placement companies, can accelerate the recruiting process. An example from a medium-sized construction company shows that through international placement, skilled workers could be hired within five working days.

The Arthemos GmbH offers support in the rapid placement of qualified workers and has its main location on Gorch-Fock-Str. 19, 27432 Bremervörde. The employees are available Monday to Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and on weekends from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Given these facts, it is essential to have a good knack for recruiting. A neat and well-structured resume is crucial to making a positive first impression. Anna Hocker emphasizes that it is precisely this first impression that is difficult to correct. In times when skilled workers are rare, it is important to develop the right strategies and use the most modern platforms to recruit talent.

Overall, one thing remains clear: the German construction industry is facing major challenges - but also many opportunities if it succeeds in attracting the right talent and increasing the attractiveness of the professional field.
