Arson and property damage

There was further excitement in Essen (Oldenburg), where a mailbox on a single-family home in Veilchenring was damaged on New Year's Eve, December 31, 2025. A firecracker was apparently thrown into the mailbox, causing around 500 euros worth of damage. Witnesses to the incident can also contact the police in Löningen on 05432-803840.

In Garrel, the authorities reported a theft from a cigarette machine on Alte Dorfstrasse, where unknown people not only damaged the machine on the night of December 31, 2025, but also stole tobacco products. The Cloppenburg police accept tips on the same telephone number as for the other incidents.

Small fires and traffic accidents

The first day of the new year brought with it several calls for the fire department. There was a small fire in a garbage can on Eisenhutweg in Cloppenburg at 12:42 a.m., the cause of which is currently unknown and which caused 300 euros in damage. Shortly afterwards, at 4:18 a.m., three garbage cans in a residential building on Ritzereiweg caught fire. This resulted in damage to the house facade amounting to around 2,500 euros.

In addition, a Renault in Calhorner Kirchweg was completely destroyed by fire between 2:03 and 3:10 a.m., also on January 1st, with a carport and another car also being affected. The exact amount of damage is not yet known.

Drunk driving and traffic accident escapes

Another incident in Essen (Oldenburg) involved a 21-year-old who was stopped at 4:44 a.m. on January 1st because of his erratic driving style. A breath alcohol test showed 2.10 per mille, which led to a blood test and the confiscation of his driver's license.

In addition, an unknown driver was not left without consequences after he damaged a parked Daimler Benz on Memelstrasse between December 30, 2025, 8:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and then fled. The damage here amounts to around 3000 euros.

These events are tearing a small but clearly noticeable crack in the region's calm façade. It is striking that physical injuries, according to data published by the Federal Criminal Police Office and recorded between 2014 and 2024, are still not uncommon. Evidence in this regard and a high number of unreported cases remain an important issue for the safety of citizens.[Statista] reports that the number of recorded cases appears to be following a worrying trend. The occasional downfall of good morals also manifests itself in violations of and to other people's property, which leads to an increase in property damage.

The legal regulation on this, as can be found in Section 303 of the Criminal Code, provides for fines or even prison sentences of up to two years for damage to property. These acts should not be taken lightly, as attempting to damage property can also be punished. Every injured party should act in a timely manner and inform the police in order to hold potential perpetrators accountable. [Specialist lawyer] explains the legal basis.

The coming year has started turbulently, but the hope for calmer coexistence and fewer crimes remains.
