Teddy clinic in Vechta: cuddly toys become little patients!

On June 20th, the town hall of Vechta will become a colorful stage for our little globetrotters, as the Teddy Clinic opens its doors here. From 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., all children and their parents are cordially invited to have their stuffed animals examined by real doctors. The event, which is organized jointly by St. Marienhospital Vechta and Mayor Kristian Kater, has the clear goal of giving children a playful introduction to their first steps into the world of medicine and at the same time reducing fears of hospital visits.

Aloys Muhle, who is committed to the project, emphasizes: “A visit to the hospital doesn’t have to be scary.” This view is continued by the clinic manager Katharina Rinder, who points out that the teddy clinic is intended to offer the little ones playful, child-friendly points of contact with the topic of hospitals. Mayor Kristian Kater emphasizes: “We want to give the children a feeling of security.”

Teddy clinics: a successful model

What is on the program in Vechta has already proven itself in many other places. For example, the Teddy Clinic is run by medical students from the Justus Liebig University in Giessen. This facility encourages preschool children and their families to come along with their stuffed animals. Here the cuddly toys act as “patients” and the children take on the role of little doctors and companions. Your goal? Create a special experience that helps little participants lose their fear of doctor visits.

In the Teddy Clinic in Giessen there are various stations that make the healing process tangible. This is done through playful learning that builds trust in the medical processes and brings the children closer to the treatment processes.

The region is pulling together

Another example that shows the positive response to the teddy clinics is the Göttingen University Medical Center, which enables children to have their stuffed animals examined in a similar environment. Here the little patients can sit in a real waiting room, be treated in an operating room and even learn what it means to be at the dentist. The Teddy Docs, including medical students like Simon Eimter Bäumer, carry out the examinations in a playful way in order to show the children the processes and thus directly reduce fears.

The teddy clinics are an impressive example of how fears can be reduced through creative approaches in pediatric medicine. The upcoming event in Vechta is just another chapter in the success story of this special institution.
