Thomasmarkt in Vechta: Thousands of visitors celebrate a colorful weekend!

The Thomasmarkt in Vechta opened its doors today, October 24, 2025, and is attracting numerous visitors. By Sunday, the city is expecting several thousand guests who can look forward to a colorful fair mile with children's carousels and various market stalls. Preparations are in full swing and many local clubs have set up their stands to treat visitors to homemade cakes and waffles. NDR reports that the city center will become a pedestrian zone until Sunday, so that Große Straße will be completely closed from Thursday afternoon.

A special highlight of the market will be the lantern parade, which starts this evening at 6:30 p.m. with musical accompaniment by the Kolping Orchestra. The procession leads via Klingenhagen towards Bremer Tor and back to Große Straße. “Distributing gingerbread hearts to children during the parade is always welcome,” adds the organizer.

Diverse offers and traffic information

The flea market, a different kind, started on Friday at 2 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday it opens at 10:00 a.m. The shopping Sunday on October 26th from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. invites visitors to browse through the shops in the city center, which have a variety of offers and bargains. As the city of Vechta reports, the opening area for Sunday shopping extends over several streets.

In view of the expected traffic disruptions around the city center, a parking ban was imposed from Thursday evening. The city has created sufficient parking spaces for visitors, including at the train station, town hall, hospital, Bremer Tor as well as at the university and the St. Thomas College. A free shuttle service is also offered on Sundays from 12:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., which is also suitable for people with reduced mobility.

Safety at events in focus

Given the current security situation in Germany, the city is required to take comprehensive security precautions. In many cities, organizers face major challenges and financial difficulties when it comes to security at city festivals. The requirements for security concepts have increased; Municipalities not only have to secure the event itself, but also the public space. This requires cooperation with the police and emergency services. Locally reported, that security can be costly, but uncertainty is often the most expensive option - especially when lives and general trust are at stake.

With the Thomasmarkt, Vechta is entering an exciting time in which tradition and safety have to go hand in hand. Residents and visitors are invited to enjoy the diversity and hustle and bustle while organizers ensure everyone's safety.
