Nine-year Shantychor Festival: Two stages on the water in WHV!
The sound of waves and happy songs – the 9th International Shanty Choir Festival in Wilhelmshaven promises an unforgettable experience for all sea fox and music lovers. On July 13, 2025, the Bontekai will become the scene of maritime joie de vivre. Organizer Helmut Möhle has put together a varied program that is enriched by the participation of various choirs from Germany and the Netherlands. We can be particularly proud of the high-quality response: in fact, more choirs have registered than there are places available, which speaks for the popularity of this event.
A highlight are the two innovative stages, which are being installed for the first time on a navy harbor tug and the historic lightship “Norderney”. The latter is decorated with festive flags to celebrate the festival and forms an atmospheric backdrop for the convivial singing sessions that take place by the water. This maritime atmosphere is perfectly complemented by the catchy sea shanties and cheerful melodies of the choirs.
The Shanty Choir Berlin as the coronation
A very special guest is the Shanty Choir Berlin, which is not only celebrating 40 years of existence, but is also performing with a concert on July 12, 2025 at 7:30 p.m. at Yvonne Schröder's Tingel-Tangel. The choir not only brings maritime flair, but also a portion of Berlin's joie de vivre to the North Sea region. The choir also takes part in the traditional Steuben Parade in New York, which brings together numerous groups from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the USA.
A program for all lovers of maritime culture
The festival begins on Sunday, July 13, 2025 at 10 a.m. with a festive service on the lightship. The musical program will be opened by Helmut Möhle, frigate captain Rolf Hoppe and mayor Astrid Zaage. The list of participants includes, among others, the “Blue Boys from Wilhelmshaven”, the Magellan Singers from Delfzijl as well as the Shantychor Bad Zwischenahn and the Shantykoor Maritiem Winschoten.
As Wilhelmshaven Touristik reports, the festival aims to promote community and culture and to bring a bit of maritime joy to everyone involved. The activities not only provide space for singing along, but also for enjoying the classic tunes that will capture the hearts of the audience.
Overall, we are looking forward to a wonderful festival dedicated to shanty singing that highlights the traditional values of seafaring - an event that you definitely shouldn't miss.
