Onset of winter in Lower Saxony: snow, but mild December in sight!
Winter is finally showing its cold side! Today, November 30th, 2025, Lower Saxony is expecting its first real winter weekend, accompanied by frosty temperatures, snow and actually some sunshine. But how long will this white magic last? Weather expert Dominik Jung is skeptical. In his forecast he warns that there is no more wintry weather in sight from the coming days, which could definitely raise eyebrows. Instead, gusts of wind and storms are expected until December 11th, which could quickly dispel the winter idyll.
Jung describes December as potentially milder, with temperatures that are likely to be one to two degrees above the climate average for the years 1991 to 2020. No frost is expected in the coming weeks – night temperatures will remain below freezing until at least mid-December. The weather will be mixed with a lot of gray and at times rainy. According to Jung, it could be “boring” and “dull weather” if the temperatures are between 4 and 8 degrees until the weekend.
An unusual winter is approaching
A notable anomaly in precipitation is expected in northern Germany in December - we could be in for more precipitation than usual, especially on the North Sea coast, where low pressure systems could bring rain more frequently. A return to more normal precipitation levels is expected in January, but it could also become wetter again in February, with several lows moving across the country. A final assessment of the weather situation will not be possible until the end of February. Until then, all we can do is keep a close eye on the weather forecasts.
