Blood donations in Klein Nordende: Your help counts – secure an appointment!
In northern Germany, the blood supply situation is a constant challenge. More than 15,000 blood donations are needed every day to ensure that patients who rely on blood transfusions - whether for surgery, transplants or cancer treatment - receive sufficient care. This has that DRK blood donation service noted.
Blood donation campaigns take place regularly in the Pinneberg district, and the figures from recent years show how important this initiative is. A total of 8,928 blood donations were made there in 2024, which shows a constant, albeit slightly decreasing, trend compared to previous years (8,831 donations in 2022 and 9,008 in 2023). The average blood donor in the county makes around two donations per year, which equates to about 4,400 active donors.
Urgent need and exciting event
The situation becomes particularly critical with regard to certain blood groups, such as the negative Rhesus groups. The supply situation is tense, especially for blood groups 0 negative, A negative and B negative, as there is often only one day of supply security left. In the Pinneberg district, the proportion of negative blood group 0 is 9 percent, while in the population this is only 6 percent. Rhesus-negative donors are therefore particularly in demand.
In order to maintain supplies, the blood donation service relies on continuous donations, as blood products only have a limited shelf life. “There are always donors who are willing to be contacted in the event of a shortage of supplies, especially the universal donors in group 0 negative,” said those responsible at the DRK. To meet this need, a blood donation campaign will take place next Monday, July 7th, from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Klein Nordende community center.
Blood groups and their meaning
Blood group compatibility plays a crucial role in transfusions. People with blood group 0 can theoretically receive blood from all other groups, which is why this group is particularly important in emergencies, while carriers of blood group AB Rhesus positive can only donate to recipients of their own group. This shows how complicated and crucial the distribution and availability of blood types are. Before transfusions, a bedside test is always carried out to check the ABO identity, as lack of compatibility can lead to serious, life-threatening complications, such as: blooddonation.de highlights.
It is important that all age groups take part in the donations, especially since the proportion of blood donors under the age of 25 is currently only 9.3 percent. The decline in first-time donors from 846 in 2023 to 788 in 2024 makes it clear that a generational change is urgently needed. Many from the baby boomer generation are currently the main donors - this is over a quarter in Schleswig-Holstein.
