Drunk driver ends up in Kleiner Kiel with her VW – investigations are underway!

On the night of Sunday to Monday, a traffic accident occurred in downtown Kiel, which not only caused a stir, but also kept the police on tenterhooks. A 20-year-old woman was driving her VW Jetta from Rathausstrasse towards the opera house around 2 a.m. when she lost control of her vehicle and ended up in the Kleiner Kiel body of water. This incident, which occurred on July 14, 2025, brought with it some tricky moments, as ndr.de reports.

The young woman was not only a drunk driver, but also did not have a valid driver's license. A voluntary breath alcohol test showed 1.3 per mille, which is worrying, especially given the recurring problem of alcohol-related traffic accidents in Germany. According to statistics from the Federal Statistical Office, there is a significant increase in such cases every year. The latest statistics show that over 80,000 alcohol-related traffic accidents were registered in 2024, which highlights the urgency of preventative measures, as can be found on Statista.

Accident and rescue operation

When the 20-year-old was unable to turn in the curve, the car sank into the Kleiner Kiel, so that only the rear stuck out of the water. Luckily, she and her 23-year-old passenger were able to free themselves from the vehicle and call the police. Both reportedly sustained minor abrasions and were taken to hospital for observation. Significantly, the passenger was uninjured.

The fire department was quickly on the scene and secured the vehicle, while the towing service was supposed to pull the car out of the water on Monday morning. Police have launched an investigation into the driver, who is now facing several charges, including endangering road traffic and driving under the influence of alcohol. In order to avoid such incidents in the future, both legal regulations and preventive measures are urgently needed.

A worrying trend

Unfortunately, these incidents do not stop. Every year many people ask themselves how often alcohol-related traffic accidents really occur. The statistics above show that there is a change that should definitely be considered. Even if you think friends have one too many drinks just a few nights, the consequences can be devastating. Regional prevention projects could make a difference here and hopefully reduce the numbers soon.

What is certain is that no one should be behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol. Making this clear is not only a task for the police, but also a social responsibility. Every accident not only brings with it individual tragedies, but also has far-reaching consequences for society as a whole.
