Lübeck is planning a new elementary school on Geniner Ufer: roof courtyard for students!
Something is happening in Lübeck! The city is planning to build a new elementary school in the new development area on Geniner Ufer, which is expected to be completed by summer 2029. This was recently decided by the construction committee and the main committee will decide on the project on December 9th. Not only the school is planned in this area, but also a daycare center and a sports hall.
The total investment for the ambitious project amounts to around 39 million euros, of which around 10 million euros will flow as funding. The new primary school will offer space for up to 300 children with twelve classrooms and is intended to help relieve the burden on the neighboring Bugenhagen School in the St. Lorenz Süd district. In order to take into account the increasing number of students in the St. Jürgen district, the three-class structure of the new school is of great importance.
Concept and design of the new school
The building itself will house a spacious cafeteria, a library and a break hall on the ground floor. Teachers' rooms and administrative offices are located on the first floor. Particularly interesting: Part of the schoolyard will be created on the roof of the connecting building as a rest and learning zone with raised beds. At 5,820 square meters, the property has a comparatively small area for the ambitious plans.
The daycare center will also be set up in the new development area. It will include two elementary groups with 20 children each, two crèche groups (10 children each) and a mixed-age group with up to 20 children. The operation of the daycare center will be outsourced to an external provider, which will bring the city annual rental income of around 140,000 euros. The planned sports hall will be designed as a single-field hall and should significantly enrich sporting activities in the district.
Further developments in Lübeck
The new primary school building in Buntekuh is expected to begin in 2027 and will have around 4,700 square meters of gross floor area, which means almost twice as much space as the previous building. Through these massive investments the city will respond to the increasing demand for school places.
However, before construction can begin on the Geniner Ufer, some preparatory measures must be carried out. From January to October 2026, the site will be filled by 1.5 meters and 400 piles will be driven into the ground to ensure the building is stable. The building permit is expected for October 2026 and construction work could then start in March 2027. Completion should ultimately take place in May 2029.
Overall, Lübeck looks to the future in an exciting way, with the prospect of modern educational institutions that meet current and future requirements.
