Lübeck Marathon 2025: Organic food and sustainability in focus!

On October 19, 2025, the Stadtwerke Lübeck Marathon will feature a special highlight for the first time: the runners' food will be offered in organic quality. This means that over 6,000 participants and around 600 helpers can look forward to healthy and tasty food. Chief organizer Peter Mauritz emphasizes that the decision to use organic food not only serves quality, but also sustainability. Lübecker Nachrichten reports that the products are from the producer-consumer association (EVG) Landwege e.G. as well as from the northern German organic partners Voelkel and Grell Naturkost.

Dedicated helpers take care of the around 10,000 portions that are distributed at the six refreshment points along the route and at the finish. They receive a special green country road bag with contents pre-packed to ensure a smooth process. A variety of snacks will also be distributed, including around 3,000 bananas, 1,800 apples, 1,800 oranges as well as 800 bottles of non-alcoholic beer and a selection of sweet and salty snacks as well as juices and shots.

Sustainability as the top priority

At a time when climate protection and sustainability are very important to many people, the Lübeck Marathon is taking an important step with its organic food. The event aims to set new standards in sustainable sporting events. A total of 40,000 recyclable paper cups and 5,000 reusable plastic cups will be provided. To avoid plastic waste, glass bottles are used wherever possible.

The current situation of EVG Landwege, which is struggling with a restructuring plan due to insolvency, still gives the whole thing a special note: the collaboration aims not only to arouse enthusiasm for organic, but also to protect the livelihoods of the producers.

Student run and large numbers of participants

In addition, the Lübecker Nachrichten student run with a distance of 2.4 kilometers will be included in the program - a premiere that is generating great interest among younger runners. Over 200 registrations for the marathon have already been received, which underlines the great interest in this regional highlight.

The organizers around the PALM-SportsPromotion agency are on the right track with their preparation. According to information on their website PALM-Sports, they take responsibility for the content and rely on transparent communication with everyone involved. This measure is not only intended to guarantee smooth operations, but also to help promote sustainability in sporting events.

In conclusion, the race is not only a competition but also a platform for environmental awareness and community. The developments in German sporting events show that more and more organizers have a strong interest in sustainable concepts, which also contributes to positive change in society. German Sport University Cologne highlights that 74% of the organizers actively integrate sustainability into their mission statement, which impressively underlines the commitment in the football sector.
