Peacock panic in Norderstedt: allotment gardeners suffer from visitors!
In Norderstedt, an unusual invasion is causing a stir among allotment gardeners: more than 20 stately peacocks are currently making the vegetable beds of a local allotment gardening association unsafe. Allotment gardener Thomas Röper reports of a veritable “swarm of peacocks” that gathers up to 28 of these magnificent birds in his garden alone. “On the one hand they are beautiful, but on the other hand they also leave devastation among our plants,” said Röper NDR.
The magnificent birds are currently nesting in the Garstedt district and raiding the gardens in search of fresh vegetables. This situation causes mixed feelings among allotment gardeners. While some people are delighted by the riot of colors of the animals, others are annoyed by the considerable damage that the peacocks cause. The garden association in Norderstedt, also known as the Kleingärtnerverein Friedrichsgabe e.V., takes care of the needs of its members and would therefore also be responsible for developing a solution.
No danger, but no moving either
The city of Norderstedt and the veterinary office are already involved in the case. The veterinary office has made it clear that the peacocks are wild animals that have no owners. The public order office has determined that the animals pose no threat to people or traffic. However, there are no plans to relocate the animals, which leaves the allotment gardeners in despair. Thomas Röper suggests capturing some of the peacocks to defuse the situation.
Allotment gardens as a retreat for nature
Allotment gardens not only have an important function for people, they also play an important role for biodiversity. An award in Hamburg highlights the ecologically valuable allotment gardens. The importance of natural gardens, which provide a retreat for wild animals, is highlighted. The jury evaluates the gardens according to strict ecological criteria, such as the use of native wild plants and the avoidance of pesticides. Such initiatives show that allotment gardens like the one in Norderstedt can also contribute to improving the ecosystem. After all, these garden areas were set up after the Second World War to improve the nutritional situation of the population.
The allotment garden associations are not only responsible for managing the plots, but also for a lively community life, which is characterized by festivals and meetings in clubhouses. Smart monitoring of allotment laws and regulations is of great importance in order to make the use of the gardens sustainable and to promote community, which benefits the allotment gardeners in Norderstedt despite all the challenges with the peacocks. So while nature develops its own life, allotment gardeners have no choice but to find creative solutions.
How will the situation develop? One thing is certain: the colorful looters will keep the Friedrichsgabe e.V. allotment gardening association busy, and the search for a solution will continue. An exciting spectacle in the middle of the green gardens of Norderstedt that will certainly provide something to talk about.
