Traffic chaos on Tuesday morning: traffic jams on the A7 and A23 cause frustration!

A bumpy start to the week for many commuters: This morning several traffic accidents occurred, resulting in heavy traffic jams in rush hour traffic in northern Germany. There were massive disruptions, particularly on Autobahn 7 and Autobahn 23, which resulted in up to 45 minutes longer travel times for those affected.

On the A7 between Kaltenkirchen in the Segeberg district and Quickborn in the Pinneberg district, a van crashed into the central barrier. This resulted in one or two lanes being closed. At the same time, there was another accident on the A23 with sheet metal damage in which one lane was blocked and only one lane was opened. Here, vehicles piled up for up to seven kilometers between Pinneberg-Nord and Elmshorn, causing frustrated commuters who sometimes needed up to 45 minutes longer to get to work, as ndr.de reports.

The cause of the accident remains unclear

Another serious traffic accident occurred in Hamburg on Monday, causing traffic jams that stretched for miles. A collision between a truck and a car led to a backlog of around ten kilometers on the A7 southbound, between the northwest triangle and Stellingen. The A23 was also affected, with a traffic jam of around five kilometers. Although one person suffered shock, there were initially no serious injuries reported. A spokesman for the traffic control center expects that the effects of traffic jams could become even worse due to the end of the holidays and the associated rush hour traffic, as welt.de points out.

Increase in traffic accidents

These incidents shed further light on road safety in Germany. According to a report by tagesschau.de, the number of deaths and injuries in traffic accidents increased in 2022. Despite an increase of 9% to a total of 2,788 deaths compared to 2021, the number remains below pre-Corona levels. The curious trend shows that 70% of accidents resulting in personal injury occurred in urban areas, while only 6% occurred on highways. Cars are the most common vehicles involved in accidents.

Unfortunately, these terrible events have also become more frequent in recent years. It is hoped that the situation on the roads will improve with increasing awareness and traffic education in order to prevent further accidents and thus ensure the safety of both commuters and other road users.
