In a groundbreaking ruling, the Kiel Regional Court has decided that the vegan liqueur “Liqueur without Egg” from Warlich Rum from northern Germany can continue to bear its name. This decision, announced on October 28, 2025, represents a significant victory for the young spirits start-up, which prevailed against the spirits industry protection association. The court made it clear that “egg-free liqueur” and “egg liqueur alternative” are not misleading terms and are therefore worthy of protection.

The association's chairman, William Verpoorten, who is also the owner of the market-leading eggnog, had accused Warlich Rum of misleading consumers with its name. However, managing director Ole Wittmann was of the opinion that a liqueur that does not contain eggs should be described as such. He expressed relief after the verdict and emphasized that he was not only concerned about the commercial well-being of his company, but also about educating consumers.

Clarity in the legal dispute

The legal dispute was supervised by lawyer Peter Weiler and brought to the fore the question of whether consumer protection or manufacturer interests had priority. The court ultimately ruled in favor of consumer protection and criticized the misleading arguments as unfounded. The process was financed through a crowdfunding campaign that received a lot of community support.

Warlich Rum, known for producing high-quality Jamaican rum and various liqueurs since 2019, introduced “Eggless Liqueur” in 2023. This liqueur has already had to overcome a few hurdles on its way, but the company has always been able to hold its own so far.

Trend towards responsible consumption

The majority of the population enjoys alcoholic beverages in moderation and values ​​healthy consumption. Initiatives such as “Massvoll-geniessen.de” and the parent prevention campaign “Speak plainly!” have made a significant contribution to raising awareness of responsible drinking.
