Construction work on the B111: Access to Usedom is limited!

Usedom, the popular holiday island on the Baltic Sea, is also attracting many travelers this summer. But the most beautiful spot on the beach could pose challenges for some vacationers in the coming weeks. Construction work on federal highway 111 is affecting accessibility to the island and could have disruptive effects on the journey to the sunny coast.

From Tuesday, June 17th to Friday, June 20th, 2025, federal highway 111 in Wolgast will be completely closed at night. These measures aim to renew the road surface between the post office intersection and the intersection to the port. The road will be closed to traffic from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., which could be particularly problematic for those traveling to and from Usedom. Due to the narrow road conditions and safety concerns, a half-way closure is not possible, according to the Neustrelitz road construction authority. If the work is not completed during these nights, the closure could even continue until the night of June 20th to 21st in order to complete remaining work.

Detours for drivers and truck traffic

However, there are alternative routes for drivers to avoid the closure. Travelers towards Usedom will be redirected via Werftstrasse and Kronwiekstrasse, while those returning from Usedom will be routed via Robert-Koch-Strasse and other alternative routes. A diversion over the Zecheriner Bridge is planned for truck traffic in order not to further disrupt safety and traffic flow.

The organizers, such as the Usedom Tourism Office, advise all travelers to find out about the current situations in good time and, if necessary, to start earlier in order to avoid unnecessary stress and delays. Weather-related delays could also prolong the work and thus the traffic chaos.

Why the construction work is necessary

However, the renewal of the road surface has an important background: the road conditions should be significantly improved in order to enable both travelers and local road users to drive safely and pleasantly. In addition, the roads in the region are crucial for the many thousands of tourists who visit Usedom every year.

Overall, the anticipation of summer contrasts with the short-term inconveniences that construction work brings. A little patience and planning can't hurt when traveling to the idyllic island. We will keep you updated and wish all holidaymakers a relaxing time on Usedom!
