On November 7th, the anticipation can already be felt, because St. Martin's Day will be celebrated in just a few days. On November 11th the time has come and many families in Bremen and the surrounding area are preparing for the traditional celebration with lantern parades. The biggest of them, this Bremen Four sea of lights, will take place on November 7th and promises to be a real highlight for young and old.
From 5 p.m. the participants gather at the Bremen market square, where an entertaining stage program with music and live presentation awaits visitors from 5:30 p.m. It finally starts at 6 p.m.: the lantern parade leads through the city center and is accompanied by an estimated 4,000 people. A beautiful sight when the homemade lanterns with different motifs, such as the sun, moon or animals, illuminate the darkness.
Tradition and community
St. Martin's Day, celebrated on November 11th, has a long tradition and commemorates Saint Martin of Tours, famous for sharing his cloak with a freezing beggar. This gesture of charity and kindness is also reflected in the lantern parades, where children parade through the streets with their lanterns and sing songs. In Bremen, parallel to the sea of lights, there is also a lantern run around Lake Vahr. This starts at 4:30 p.m. and offers a colorful program with children's songs, delicious children's punch and sausages. There are also many other lantern parades that will take place over the next few days. On November 9th, the lantern parade will be held at Findorffermarkt, which begins at 4 p.m. and offers a musical supporting program, followed by a parade through the streets. It's also a festive day in Bremerhaven: from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., the city center is transformed into an adventure world with lantern making, face painting and other attractions.
