Captain Döll leads DHB women to World Cup victory – quarter-finals await!

The German handball players are currently showing an impressive performance at the World Cup and are celebrating their fourth victory. In today's game they beat the Faroe Islands 36:26 and move closer to the quarter-finals. The national coach Markus Gaugisch emphasizes the good performance of his players, but still sees room for improvement. In Dortmund, 7,122 spectators saw the game, with many seats remaining empty, probably due to a DFB Cup game nearby between Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen. NRW Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst was also there and promoted the upcoming Olympic Games.

Particularly noteworthy is the performance of captain Antje Döll, who scored six goals in this match and was thus the best thrower of the game. However, the German start to the second half was initially bumpy; the lead dwindled to 21-17 before a decisive 4-0 run put the team back in control. The national coach emphasized that the last phase of the game showed a declining performance from the team, but this was of no consequence given the comfortable lead.

A look at the results so far

In the preliminary round, the German women have an outstanding record of three wins: 32:25 against Iceland, 38:12 against Uruguay and 31:20 against Serbia. The latter game took place in the sold-out Porsche Arena in Stuttgart, where the team moved into the main round in Dortmund as group winners. The German Handball Federation (DHB) invested one million euros in the world championship, and for the first time the female players benefit from days that are just as long as those of their male colleagues. There is also a prize of 425,000 euros for a tournament victory.

National coach Gaugisch has high ambitions and is aiming for the team to reach the semi-finals, which would be even more important after the last medal for the German women at the 2007 World Cup in France. Viola Leuchter, one of the young talents in the team, as well as the experienced Aimée von Pereira, Nieke Kühne and Nina Engel contribute significantly to the strong performances in defense and attack.

The challenges in the main round

The upcoming games against Montenegro and Spain will be crucial. Gaugisch makes it clear that the opponents in the main round will be much stronger; Teams like France, Norway, Denmark and Sweden are on the radar. Analysts also note that the German women's team has been stagnating in its performance for years - a circumstance that cannot be ignored.

Overall, the team is pleased with the progress and the opportunity to take another step towards the quarterfinals on December 2, 2025. Spectators can look forward to exciting games and are invited to cheer on their favorites to celebrate their next successes.
