New 2FA app for more security: Version 5.5.0 now available!
Internet security is playing an increasingly important role, and this doesn't just apply to large companies. More and more people are realizing that two-factor authentication (2FA) is a great way to secure their digital accounts. The latest development in this area is the new version 5.5.0 of the 2FAS Auth app, which offers a variety of improvements for Android and iOS users. The app makes it possible to generate so-called one-time passwords (OTP), which are requested in addition to the password when you log in and thus increase protection against unauthorized access. As stadt-bremerhaven.de reports, the user interface has been revised and now also supports landscape format display on tablets.
The update also includes improved support for the 16 KB page size, updates to translations in various languages and new icons that better fit the current Android design. The developers are also in the process of integrating a password manager, but this is still a work in progress. All of this offers an attractive reason to engage with the app.
New features and advantages of the 2FA apps
Another notable product in the world of two-factor authentication is the Aegis app. This open source app is also free and focuses on flexibility and security. Compared to other 2FA tools, it offers a variety of authentication algorithms beyond the common SHA1 and enables cloud backups and data file export. One of the outstanding features is that the app works completely offline and requires only a few permissions, which reinforces the user's data protection decision. According to getaegis.app, locking the app will automatically prompt for PIN or biometric data, providing an additional security step.
Another plus is that the Aegis app makes it possible to manage personal keys without having to transfer data to the cloud. This means that no SIM card or phone number is required when changing devices, making the transition to a new device much easier. The app also works with multiple websites and servers, which underlines its versatility.
Why 2FA is important
But why is two-factor authentication so important? This is also confirmed by the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), which emphasizes that many online service providers use 2FA as an additional means of user identification. Authentication usually takes place in two steps: First, the user enters their password, followed by further confirmation, which can be done by a second factor - be it a code sent to a mobile device or a biometric identification, such as a fingerprint. The BSI emphasizes that the use of several factors from different categories, such as knowledge (password, PIN), possession (chip card, TAN generator) and biometrics (fingerprint), which significantly improves security.
Practice shows that 2FA is particularly important to prevent identity theft and data loss. However, there are also some challenges, such as extended sign-up time or loss of an ownership-based factor, which can make accessing a service difficult. Therefore, experts recommend setting up several “second factors” in order to have control over your own online accounts at all times.
