Lower Saxony is launching 19 projects for child poverty and social participation
In Lower Saxony, great attention is paid to socially disadvantaged areas. A total of 450,000 euros is available to support 19 neighborhood projects that aim to improve the quality of life in disadvantaged neighborhoods. This initiative is seen by Nord24 as crucial for combating child poverty.
Under the motto “Equal opportunities in the neighborhood”, the selected projects are intended to help promote social participation and economic prospects. According to Lower Saxony's Minister of Social Affairs Andreas Philippi, who emphasizes the dependence on place of residence and the associated economic security and health, women, people with a migration background, single parents and families with several children are particularly affected. The regional differences in quality of life are often enormous.
Diversity of projects
A quick look at the projects shows the above-mentioned farm in Hanover-Sahlkamp, where students can take on responsibility and develop language skills. In addition, special offers for girls and a variety of networking opportunities between refugees and German citizens are implemented. Funding applications were received between May 5 and May 28, 2025, with over 113 applications submitted, of which 19 were selected and approved, according to LAG Niedersachsen.
Each selected project receives between 2,500 and 30,000 euros, which gives the initiators the opportunity to put their ideas into action in the current calendar year. The partners in this endeavor are the State Working Group on Social Issues, which helps shape the projects and accompanies their development. The LAG emphasizes the importance of breaking down structural barriers and promoting solidarity structures, as reported by Social Reporting Lower Saxony.
The way forward
The aim of the projects is clear: a sustainable improvement of the social conditions in problematic neighborhoods. Aspects such as education, healthy development and social integration are the focus of the measures. By promoting solidarity networks, the Lower Saxony Ministry of Social Affairs, Labor, Health and Equality wants to actively combat child poverty.
At a time when social inequalities are increasing, these initiatives show that it is possible to make a difference through community engagement. Every euro that flows into these neighborhood projects is an investment in a better future for the children and families in Lower Saxony. It remains to be hoped that the projects achieve their goals and lay a strong foundation for the next generations.
