Sailing festival Sail 2025”: Bremerhaven expects 1.2 million visitors!

The sailors from all over the world have set off and are heading to the seaside town of Bremerhaven on Monday. The big tall ship meeting “Sail” will take place there, which promises numerous maritime highlights from August 11th to 15th, 2025. The approximately 250 ships expected include historic expedition ships, impressive windjammers and modern cruise ships that will amaze you. Particularly outstanding are the sailing training ships “Alexander von Humboldt II” and the “Gorch Fock”, which will dock in Bremerhaven on Tuesday. Borkener Zeitung reports that the highlight of the event will be an entry parade on Wednesday, in which around 100 ships will be seen in a colorful parade at the mouth of the Weser.

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will open the “Sail” in a ceremonial setting on board the “Gorch Fock”. The international guests include the “Unión” from Peru, the largest and fastest sail training ship in South America, and “Shabab Oman II”, a Royal Navy barque from Oman. The “Sagres II” from Portugal will also be on display, returning after a year in the shipyard. The “Anna af Sand” from Norway, one of the oldest active sailing ships, will also dock here.

A festival for young and old

The festival not only attracts passionate sailors, but also offers numerous offers for visitors: concerts take place on seven stages, including with well-known artists such as Johannes Oerding, Ronan Keating and the No Angels. The organizers expect around 1.2 million visitors by Sunday. The musical highlights are complemented by a variety of culinary offerings, including street food, that invite you to feast.

The festive program also includes a grand opening evening with colorful lights and an impressive laser show. The event will culminate on Saturday evening with a spectacular fireworks display over the Weser, which will captivate visitors. Safety is a top priority: the fire brigade, technical relief agency and police are on site to ensure everything runs smoothly. Bremerhaven Stadt promises that the event will not only be a spectacle, but will also contribute to improving the image of the lakeside city.

Another maritime highlight

The “Sail” is just the start of an exciting maritime month in Bremerhaven: The “Maritime Days” take place from August 16th to 20th, which offers another attraction for ship and maritime interests. Here, visitors can look forward to around 80 historic sailing, motor and steam ships, many of which open their doors to the so-called “open ship” so that visitors can experience the ships up close. Busplaner refers to tempting trips, including with the three-master “Grand Duchess Elisabeth” or the Dutch schooner “Mare Frisium”, which will sail on August 19th an impressive fireworks trip.

Visitors can look forward to a first-class maritime experience that will make the hearts of both sailing enthusiasts and the entire family beat faster. With the expected turnover of around 60 million euros and the event costs of around 3 million euros, of which the state covers 1.1 million euros, the “Sail” promises to be great business for the region. An event not to be missed!
