Road safety: How we can prevent accidents!
Road Safety Day is celebrated on June 21st, an important occasion launched by the German Road Safety Council (DVR). This day is intended to draw attention to the importance of road safety in everyday life. Every year around 3,000 people die in road traffic in Germany, which illustrates the urgency and relevance of this issue. On this special day, the authorities call on all road users, be they pedestrians, cyclists or drivers, to be more considerate and to show concentrated and defensive behavior.
There were a total of 4,159 traffic accidents in Bremerhaven in 2024, which often resulted in serious injuries or even deaths. The police make it abundantly clear that many of these accidents could have been avoided through proactive behavior. Road Safety Day aims to raise awareness among the population and contribute to improving safety on the roads, as the Bremerhaven Police reports.
A look at the statistics
The official statistics on traffic incidents show that the roads need to be made safer. On January 1, 2024, over 10 million people were recorded in the fitness to drive register (FAER), which fell to just under 10.1 million a year later. The high number of violations in 2024 is particularly alarming: 238,223 crimes were registered, including 76,725 alcohol violations and 32,850 hit and run cases. In addition to criminal offenses, there were also almost 3.9 million administrative offenses that put many road users at risk in the past.KBA
Achieve a better understanding of accidents
The Statistics on Road Safety provides detailed lists of accidents, people and vehicles involved. This data is crucial in order to get a comprehensive picture of what happened in the accident. They help to develop tailor-made measures for legislation, traffic education and infrastructure. The findings also show that many traffic accidents are caused by human error, which underlines the great importance of education and awareness.
Road Safety Day is not just an individual event, but a call to all of us to assume our own responsibility in road traffic. Proactive and considerate behavior can ultimately save the lives of many people.
