The fiery angel: operatic escape into traumatic worlds at the Theater Bremen
On October 28, 2025, the opera “The Fiery Angel” premiered at the Bremen Theater, a gripping production directed by Barbora Horáková. The dramatic story revolves around the main character Renata, a mentally challenged woman who is haunted by visions. This opera, which is based on Valeri Bryussov's 1908 novel, is characterized by sensitive themes and addresses, among other things, traumatic childhood experiences as well as the protagonist's fragile relationship with her body and sexuality.
The performance places strong emphasis on Renata's escape from her painful reality marked by toxic relationships and supernatural elements. The audience is confronted with a dramatic exorcism at the end of the opera, which impressively illustrates the character's inner conflict. In the role of Renata, soprano Nadine Lehner delights the audience with a performance that conveys both strong emotions and vulnerability.
An innovative stage design
The stage design of this production is just as impressive as the action itself. A rotating construction that looks like a scaffolding forms the backdrop in which different scenes such as hotel rooms, a bar and a children's room alternate. Black and white videos are also used to enhance the emotional depth of the performance. Critics praise the creative handling of these visual elements and the cleverly placed moments of surprise in which several women appear in identical clothes and hairstyles.
However, the Bremen Theater warns in its program about the sensitive content of the opera, which includes explicit depictions of sexual violence and self-harming behavior. These themes are not suitable for all audiences and should be enjoyed with caution.
