New coaching team, fresh talent: Werder Bremen is taking off!

SV Werder Bremen has a new coach at the helm, Renee Verschuren, who wants to bring a breath of fresh air into the sport of handball. The start under her leadership is already scheduled for July 20, 2025, when the team plays its first test match against third division team TSV Nord Harrislee as part of the club's 75th anniversary. The Klaus-Dieter-Fischer-Halle was chosen as the location for the first performance tests and getting to know each other, and Verschuren has committed to intensive preparation for the new season.

In the run-up to the season, there will also be a training camp in Zwartemeer, Netherlands from July 24th to 27th, 2025. And that's just the beginning: Further tournament participation has already been decided - including the Heinrich Horn tournament in Melsungen and a tournament in Bremen, where Buxtehuder SV II will also be a guest. Here the trainer not only wants to strengthen the team, but also continue to promote the club's tradition as a training facility.

Challenges before the season

However, the first news from the current league season is rather mixed. The start was unsuccessful and Renee Verschuren's team found itself at the bottom of the table. A flu illness and bad luck with injuries are causing problems for the players. Nevertheless, there is no reason to panic - the coach emphasizes that the team has only played two games and relegation is not yet an issue. It is now important that all players get fit again in order to stabilize the team.

Verschuren describes her style as a mixture of strictness and looseness - trust and fun should come first. Despite the challenges, she dares to use every player, even if she originally had a different plan. Her personal goal: The return of the injured players and the establishment of a stable team that not only shows good performances, but also promotes the development of junior players.

A look into the future

The coming season also promises a lot of potential, not only for the team, but also for cooperation within the club itself. While Verschuren has already taken responsibility for the second women's team and the junior team, it remains to be seen how she can continue to manage the transition between the junior and senior areas.

In addition, it is becoming increasingly interesting to see how sports psychology is becoming more important in handball, which also inspires other teams. Sports psychologist Henning Thrien emphasizes that there are many areas that have so far received little attention. His collaboration with André Haber at SC DHfK Leipzig served as a successful example of how important psychological support is for coaches and players. Such approaches could also help SV Werder Bremen to tackle the challenges of the current season and emerge stronger from the misery.

An exciting but also challenging time lies ahead for the Bremen handball players. With a fresh coaching team and a motivated group, the encounter will take place on the 30th/31st. August 2025 will be a first groundbreaking step in the 2nd Handball Bundesliga.
