Security for Jews: Senate reaffirms strong protection!
On July 3, 2025, an important exchange of views took place between the Jewish community in the state of Bremen and the Senate. In times of increasing anti-Semitic tendencies and in view of the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel and the current situation in Gaza and Iran, it was high time for such a meeting. As senatspressestelle.bremen.de reports, the safety of Jews was the central topic of the talks.
Representatives of the Senate, including Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte and Justice Senator Claudia Schilling, have spoken out clearly against anti-Semitic acts of violence. They emphasized the need to make Jewish life in Bremen visible and safe. Bovenschulte in particular noted that Jewish life must be protected without any ifs or buts. For many people, the Senate's in-depth support is of great importance, especially given the alarming increase in anti-Semitic acts in the region.
Rising anti-Semitic acts
The situation is not only tense in Bremen. Anti-Semitism has also increased significantly in Lower Saxony since autumn 2023. As [n-tv.de](https://www.n-tv.de/regionales/niedersachsen-und-bremen/ Zahl-judenhostier-Taten-enorm-stieg-article25838204.html) reports, the Anti-Semitism Research and Information Center (RIAS) recorded a total of 650 anti-Semitic acts in 2024, almost twice as many as in the previous year. This includes attacks, threats and damage to property, which are unsettling more and more people.
The increasing brutality of the acts is particularly worrying. There were three cases of extreme violence in 2024, including an arson attack on the synagogue in Oldenburg. A mentally ill man confessed to the crime, but the number of unreported incidents is high. Jewish communities are therefore increasingly calling for measures against anti-Semitism.
Joint action against anti-Semitism
The Jewish community in Bremen has expressed concern about the current security situation. During the meeting, chairwoman Elvira Noa described the protective measures as an “investment in the future” for all citizens. Her deputy, Grigory Pantiyelew, reported many concerned calls and letters after October 7, 2023. Rabbi Natanel Teitelbaum thanked the Senate and called for concrete steps to secure the Jewish community.
The Senate not only confirmed that it supports the Jewish community, but also decided to expand the advisory and awareness-raising offerings at universities. Education Senator Aulepp emphasized that schools must be places of diversity and respectful coexistence in which there is no place for anti-Semitism.
In a climate in which anti-Semitism is increasingly becoming a threat, it is of great importance to take joint action against these developments. The Senate has once again emphasized that cooperation with the Jewish community and the security authorities is essential to protect and promote Jewish life in Bremen.
