Raging storm: Bremen under water – fire brigade fights against natural forces!

On Sunday night, the storm sent the Bremen fire department into action. Around ten operations were recorded, mainly due to broken trees and broken branches. Fortunately, there were no injuries, which is always a bright spot in such weather conditions. The A27 in the direction of Bremerhaven had to be closed temporarily; the Schwanewede exit was particularly affected because flooding caused massive disruptions here. In addition to Bremen, the regional fire departments also reported numerous operations, documenting the extensive work of the rescuers on this stormy night.  daily news

In Beverstedt, in the nearby Cuxhaven district, a residential building caught fire, which, according to initial information, may have been ignited by a lightning strike. The Fonsstock Festival in Nordenham, Wesermarsch district, also had to be ended early due to adverse weather conditions. The region around Osterholz also reported an increased number of operations, which illustrates the extent of the storm.

Heavy rain and its consequences

The heavy rain was particularly alarming in Bremen and Bremerhaven. Affected districts such as Woltmershausen, Neustadt and Walle were under water up to the basement windows. The fire department had its hands full: around 400 missions were counted in Bremen, while around 30 missions were reported in Bremerhaven. Cellars were pumped out as a precaution, with the fire brigade primarily acting in critical situations. Within a short period of time, up to 60 liters of rain fell per square meter, which corresponds to a monthly amount of precipitation. This even made some underpasses impassable, and buses and trams had to take diversions because the tracks were under water. Buten and inland

The damage caused by the heavy rain did not just affect the structure of the buildings. The railway line between Bremen and Bremerhaven was also disrupted by a lightning strike, leading to delays lasting hours. A replacement bus service was set up between Stubben and Bremerhaven to help affected travelers. This meant that some trains had to stop at earlier stations, while others had to avoid the tracks entirely. Buten and inland

Outlook and warnings

The Federal Office of Cartography has published a heavy rain advisory map that points out the dangers of flooding. This map is based on various analyzes and documents heavy rain events that can potentially lead to similar scenarios. Of course, all of this information is without guarantee and the public is urged to remain vigilant. Berlin data
