A7 in Hamburg: traffic madness! Elbe tunnel closed until Monday!

The A7 in Hamburg provides a lot of driving fun this weekend - but not in the best sense. From Friday evening until Monday at 5 a.m., the traffic flow on this important transport hub will be disrupted by a complete closure. The section between the Hamburg-Stellingen and Heimfeld junctions is affected. The reason for the closure is the installation of new traffic sign gantries and tests for the new tunnel control center. How NDR Reportedly, the Elbe Tunnel will also not be accessible during this time.

Drivers should be patient as a large detour has already been announced. If you are coming from the south, you should take the A1 from Buchholzer triangle/Horster triangle via the AK Maschener Kreuz. And for everyone from the north, take the B205 from the Neumünster-Süd junction. Large-capacity and heavy-duty transport in particular must avoid the closure widely. This measure is part of the repeated closures in connection with the expansion of the A7 to eight lanes and improved noise protection.

Major events and future closures

The weekend looks to be turbulent, as two major events are scheduled for Saturday: an HSV home game against Borussia Dortmund will attract numerous fans, while a demonstration with up to 20,000 participants could take up space in the city. If you want to plan everything with a time buffer, you should be aware of the current traffic situation in Hamburg - traffic jams, construction sites and other obstructions await drivers not only on the A7, but also on the A23, A1 and A261.

There is even more for drivers in Hamburg: another full closure of the Elbe Tunnel is already planned for the period from December 5th to 8th, 2025. This means that those traveling through the city will continue to have to adapt to diversions while construction work progresses.

As a small ray of hope on the horizon: the Altona noise protection tunnel is scheduled to be completed by 2028. Then the residents can enjoy a quieter life, even if some obstacles still have to be removed before then.
