Hamburg musician sentenced to suspended sentence for anti-Semitic posts
In a worrying turn of events, a Hamburg musician has been convicted of anti-Israel postings on social media. The Altona district court handed down a suspended sentence of six months. This is a consequence of using the symbols of unconstitutional and terrorist organizations as well as insults. The musician, who has already been convicted of various offenses in the past, essentially admitted the alleged acts, which the judge considered to be a decisive factor in her verdict. The defendant had over 20,000 followers on Instagram, and the reach of her power in social networks was taken into account when determining the sentence, as stern.de reports.
In this case, the content of the postings was particularly scandalous. In three cases it published a depiction of the Brandenburg Gate with a swastika flag and a light installation that showed the Israeli flag. She also shouted the slogan “From the river to the sea” into a microphone at a demonstration in Hamburg and also dedicated herself to symbols of the Al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas. Her criminal record, which already included five convictions since 2021, contributed to the severity of the sentence.
Anti-Semitism on the Internet
The problem of anti-Semitic statements on the Internet is now omnipresent. The phenomenon only really became visible during the COVID-19 pandemic, when numerous anti-Semitic content increasingly appeared online. Often together with conspiracy myths that presented the Jews and the State of Israel as the masterminds of a global conspiracy. Such ideas spread rapidly on social media and are reinforced by anonymous access and global networking. A dossier from the Federal Agency for Civic Education highlights that 70% of respondents in Germany report a frequent perception of anti-Semitism on the Internet.
Anti-Semitic content is often disguised as apparent satire or coded language and appears in the form of memes, videos or seemingly harmless comments that, in a certain context, convey a clear anti-Semitic message. The Internet acts like an accelerant here, making it easier to spread such content and promoting its normalization. More and more people are feeling emboldened by social media to express anti-Semitic views, leading to a rise in incidents not only online but also in the physical world.
More convictions in focus
A similar, but not identical, situation recently occurred in Berlin, where a 27-year-old woman was sentenced to one year and ten months in prison, suspended on probation, for anti-Semitic posts, including glorifying a suicide bombing. These postings led to serious riots in Neukölln. In these cases, as in the case of the musician, a clear connection becomes visible between the distribution of such content and the real consequences. Although the author of the posts denies her anti-Semitic attitude, the judges emphasize that the acts clearly express anti-Semitic sentiments, which is seen as aggravating the punishment, as can be read on beck.de.
The trend shows clearly: anti-Semitism is no longer a fringe phenomenon, but an urgent social problem that is becoming increasingly visible in times of social media and global networking. It remains to be hoped that such judgments will send a signal to counteract this development.
