Family from Hamburg-Billstedt dies tragically from phosphine poisoning in Istanbul
A tragedy occurred in Istanbul, where a family from Hamburg-Billstedt did not survive their vacation unscathed. As NDR reports, the family of four died of severe poisoning, which, according to a forensic medical report, was caused by phosphine. The use of aluminum phosphide, a highly toxic pesticide, appears to be the cause. This chemical, often used to combat bed bugs, reacts with water and releases the dangerous gas.
The early signs were not promising; initially food poisoning was considered. The father of the family died in a hospital in Istanbul and was then buried next to his relatives. Turkish media reported that an autopsy confirmed phosphine poisoning as the official cause of death. However, no poison was found in the victims' food, their blood or their stomachs.
The dangers of phosphine
Phosphine, which is colorless and has an unpleasant odor, poses a significant health risk. The symptoms are varied and range from dry cough and vomiting to serious impairment of liver and kidney function. The first signs such as shortness of breath and nausea can appear just ten to 15 minutes after exposure, as Apotheken Umschau explains.
Adding to the tragic circumstances in Istanbul, eleven suspects were arrested, including hotel workers and employees of a pest control company. This came after two other guests at the hotel required treatment for nausea. Police are continuing to investigate and toxicology reports are expected to provide further clarity on the cause of death.
Prevention is everything
It is important for travelers to educate themselves about the risks of food and accommodation abroad. If you have any health problems, you should consult a doctor immediately. Traveling to countries with less strict hygiene standards also poses risks. The Apotheken Umschau advises to always have the emergency numbers of the respective travel country at hand and to ensure that the accommodation is clean.
The affected families and friends face unimaginable suffering and questions that may never be answered. It is to be hoped that such tragedies can be avoided in the future.
