FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2025: Hamburg celebrates women’s basketball!

The anticipation in Hamburg is increasing! From June 19 to 22, 2025, the Hanseatic city will not only be the venue for the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2025, but will also offer an extensive supporting program that draws all eyes to women's basketball. By proclaiming the “Decade of Women’s/Girls’ Basketball,” the German Basketball Federation (DBB) has set itself an ambitious mission: to promote female basketball in Germany. While in the past women's basketball was often overshadowed by its male counterparts, its role has changed significantly and is becoming increasingly important internationally.

A central element of the supporting program is the “Women in Basketball” workshop, which will take place on June 21st and 22nd. Experts and active players will discuss various topics, including women in leadership positions and dual careers, moderated by Ireti Amojo. The discussion about volunteer protection and the promotion of young female managers will also be in focus, which makes an important contribution to strengthening women in sport. The program is supplemented by teacher training on the topic of “Basketball moves schools”, which will be offered on June 21st.

Exciting events for young talents

A highlight of the supporting program is the girls' mini festival, which will take place from June 20th to 22nd in the Wilhelmsburg district school. Here, 80 girls born in 2014 and younger are allowed to take part in workshops on topics such as cyberbullying and the joy of playing. The young participants can also expect to attend an international match and have the opportunity to purchase event shirts and certificates. This is all intended to help spark enthusiasm for basketball and sports in general among girls.

The DBB mini trainer offensive 2025/26 will also be given its starting signal and will offer 16 selected youth trainers the opportunity to further their training and to help consistently promote young talent. Meanwhile, a Female Referee Clinic will take place on Saturday, which not only imparts theoretical knowledge, but also offers practical impressions for female referees.

Challenges and successes in women's basketball

The history of women's basketball is interesting and shows many turning points, from the first games at American universities at the end of the 19th century to the founding of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) in 1996. This platform has not only increased the level of visibility in recent years, but also permanently changed the image of women in sports - from the first dunking action by a woman during a WNBA game by Lisa Leslie to the outstanding achievements of players like Diana Taurasi. Players who act as role models have inspired a new generation and motivated them to recruit in equal measure.

Current challenges exist in women's basketball, such as unequal pay compared to male athletes and lower media visibility. The necessary progress to integrate women into leadership positions remains inevitable. A 2023 survey shows that 45% of sports fans regularly watch WNBA games, which has great potential for further development.

The comprehensive supporting program for EuroBasket 2025 is a step in the right direction to increase the visibility of women's basketball and inspire the next generation of athletes. Thanks to these activities, supported by Active City Hamburg and Kellogg's, not only a safe space for empowerment and knowledge exchange is created, but also a network that promotes the future development of women's basketball in Germany.
