Hamburg's new algae laboratory: Citizens research for a sustainable future!
On October 30, 2025, the University of Hamburg launched an exciting new project: the “Laboratory for Tomorrow – Laboratory for Co-Creative Research”. Here, citizens have the opportunity to actively participate in research projects and become researchers themselves. This is not only a big step in science communication, but also an important part of promoting citizen knowledge.
The first topic is all about microalgae. These small, green wonders have the potential to make a decisive contribution to a sustainable future. They bind carbon dioxide, produce oxygen, purify water and can even be the basis for innovative biomaterials. Workshops, specialist lectures and experiments to do at home are on the program. Scientists like Dr. Abdelfatah Abomohra and Prof. Dr. Dieter Hanelt accompany the participants and provide insights into the world of microalgae.
An interactive experience for everyone
The “Laboratory for Tomorrow” is not an ordinary research room, but a walk-in research laboratory with an exhibition character. Visitors are invited to actively participate in discussions, experiments and the development of their own research questions. A special highlight is the “Home Researchers” program, in which participants can build their own bioreactors for microalgae cultivation and record their observations. Science can be experienced practically here!
As part of the program, the laboratory cooperates with a Hamburg district school. This enables students to gain valuable insights into everyday scientific life. A comprehensive range of workshops and lecture series with experts from science, climate and water management also ensure that the topic is presented in its breadth and depth.
Groundbreaking research and collaboration
The project is part of the “Calls for Transfer” funding measure of the Authority for Science, Research and Equality of the City of Hamburg. The project duration of the “Algae Lab” is planned until April 30, 2026. In a broader context, the focus on microalgae is also an important topic in the field of energy research. For example, promotes SCCER BIOSWEET In Switzerland, innovative approaches to using algae as biomass.
The center works on developing biochemical and thermochemical processes to convert biomass. The importance of algae for energy supply is highlighted, with the aim of achieving a high level of technological readiness and sustainability. This shows once again how closely science and environmental issues are intertwined.
Visit the “Laboratory for Tomorrow” and become part of a future-oriented movement that could permanently change our understanding of research and the environment!
