Anniversary in St. Mary's Cathedral: Gloria Bruni's Requiem inspires Hamburg!

On October 15, 2025, the moving music of Gloria Bruni's “Requiem a Roma” will once again make the walls of Hamburg's St. Mary's Cathedral ring. This special performance marks a return 25 years after its premiere in the Vatican that is intended to captivate audiences once again. As NDR reports, the first performance of this work took place in November 2000 in the Church of Sant'Ignazio in Rome in front of Pope John Paul II and was a benefit for the street children of the Salesian Order.

Gloria Bruni, the composer of the Requiem, will not only be the creator behind the scenes during the performance, but will also be on stage as a soloist. Under the musical direction of Wolf Kerschek, the work will be played by the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, supported by over 150 participants, including the Orchid Chamber Choir Bremen.

An emotional journey for the soul

Bruni describes her Requiem as emotional and accessible, without getting lost in technical terms. The passages in which the audience is invited to actively participate are particularly impressive. “The music is intended to provide comfort and hope for the afterlife,” explains the composer. This message not only touched the listeners' hearts the first time, but will certainly be heard again at the anniversary performance.

The response to the premiere 25 years ago was overwhelming. Bruni even received compliments from the Pope, underscoring the importance of the work. With performances in countries such as Poland, Israel, Palestrina, Germany, Belarus and Austria, the Requiem has become an internationally appreciated piece. The current performance is part of a special anniversary and is expected to bring joy to music lovers and the wider audience alike.

Advance sales for the performance are already underway, and prices range from €10 for listening seats to €50 for the best seats.
