Hoffenheim in the relegation battle: Golic as a savior in an emergency?

TSG Hoffenheim is facing a crucial summer, because after a catastrophic season in which the team had the weakest defense in the Bundesliga with 68 goals conceded, there is now a clear need for action in defense. With currently only 32 points from 34 games and a modest 15th place, the club is anything but well positioned. The last four games ended without a win - two draws and two defeats are the sobering result. The last opponent will be Bayern Munich, a real challenge as the record champions have already scored 95 goals this season.

Meanwhile, interest in Lovro Golic, a talented 19-year-old central defender from AS Roma, is growing. Golic has an expiring contract and could therefore move on a free transfer from July. Lecce and Leeds United are also keeping an eye on the young player, increasing the competition for Hoffenheim. A strong defender is urgently needed to avoid getting caught up in the relegation battle again next year, especially since Hoffenheim now relies not only on points but also on the necessary self-confidence to stay in the league against Heidenheim.

The relegation battle and the pursuers

Hoffenheim is currently three points ahead of 16th place, but the goal difference of -18 is not a comforting cushion either. Above all, the last two games are against FC Bayern Munich and against 1. FC Heidenheim. The latter could be the duel of truth, because Heidenheim is also fighting to stay in the league. With the seven points they have collected from the last three games, they have certainly given themselves hope for a possible 15th place.

In the Bundesliga's relegation battle, VfL Bochum and Holstein Kiel no longer care about staying in the first division, as both teams are relegated. Things are completely different at FC St. Pauli, who are almost saved with a 2-2 draw against Frankfurt. The gap to 16th place has narrowed, but the current form gives hope for better days. The team is currently more defensively positioned under coach Alexander Blessin, which cannot necessarily be seen as a success considering that they have only scored 18 goals this season.

What else is at stake?

In this exciting phase of the Bundesliga season, in which not only Hoffenheim, but also Heidenheim and St. Pauli are dealing with relegation, it is clear that every point counts. Hoffenheim will be looking to end their final games with a positive result to avoid the specter of relegation while potentially integrating Golic into the squad.

Whether Hoffenheim can position itself as a defender in the new season and whether the transfers are fruitful - the coming weeks promise highly dramatic scenarios in the Bundesliga's relegation battle. Only time will tell whether the efforts bear fruit and a return to success is possible.
