St. Pauli: Jones is out for a long time – Metcalfe accepts his inheritance!

On July 16, 2025, FC St. Pauli took another step in its preparation for the season by winning a friendly against Silkeborg IF 4-1. Fortunately, all players escaped without any major injuries.

However, the joy of the victory is clouded by the serious injury to newcomer Ricky-Jade Jones, who seriously injured his shoulder in the previous game against Drochtersen (0-1). The talented striker will undergo surgery on Monday and is expected to be out for the next three months. As the MOPO reports, coach Alexander Blessin made it clear that it made no sense to let Jones travel to the training camp because he is not fit to play anyway.

Understanding of the failure

Jones, who had previously scored a hat-trick in the first friendly, broke his shoulder in a fall in the second friendly against SV Drochtersen/Assel. He was immediately taken to hospital where the dislocation was diagnosed. “I'm disappointed about the injury,” said Blessin, admitting that the loss is a challenge for the team.

In the current situation, however, St. Pauli looks to the future with a positive outlook. Connor Metcalfe will be pushed into attack to replace Jones. The experienced player has already performed well on the right wing and is expected to support the team. Blessin explained that the focus in the coming training sessions and games will be on player development and that there is no pressure to sign a short-term replacement.

More challenges in the squad

In addition to Jones, another newcomer, Andréas Hountondji, is also making a name for himself. He is suffering from an ankle injury which resulted in him having to be substituted after 33 minutes in the final friendly to avoid strain. Loud Yahoo Sports St. Pauli has signed a total of eight new players to strengthen the squad. Most recently, Arminia Bielefeld's Louis Oppie was confirmed as a full-back.

During this transition phase, the club remains open to further reinforcements in attack should the opportunity arise. In addition to the injury concerns, the club is striving to promote its talents in the best possible way and to remain competitive in the intense competition of the coming season.

The situation surrounding injuries is not new in football. On footballinjuries.com we learn that muscle injuries are the most common failures in the Bundesliga. Statistics show that the causes of injuries are often close, which could be due to similar training methods. For St. Pauli it is now a matter of mastering this challenge and finding optimal solutions to make the season successful.
