Triathlon World Championship: Hamburg expects 250,000 spectators!

Last weekend the World Triathlon Championship Series, considered the “largest triathlon in the world,” took place in Hamburg. The event not only attracted top athletes, but also around 250,000 spectators to the city. On Saturday, July 12, 2025, the women's individual race was on the program, while on Sunday the Mixed Relay World Championship crowned the competitions. The route through Hamburg's city center not only promised exciting competitions, but also posed a challenge for the participants, as the route went around the Alster, with a swimming lap in the Inner Alster, followed by a cycling and running route that led to the old town.

For the women it was a sprint distance: 750 meters swimming, 20 kilometers cycling and 5 kilometers running. Among the favorites was local hero Lisa Tertsch, who was now aiming for victory after her bronze medal two years ago. Her biggest rival turned out to be Cassandre Beaugrand, who is considered the defending champion and Olympic champion. On Saturday, July 12th, the starting signal for the women's race was given at 6:35 p.m., which was broadcast live on ARD, while the men started the race at 4:35 p.m.

Strong achievements and challenges

The races had a bad star for the German athletes, who clearly missed the podium. The best German participant was Henry Graf, who took a solid 5th place despite a fall. In the men's category, last year's winner Matthew Hauser from Australia dominated, who, together with other protagonists of the series rankings such as Luke Willian, ensured exciting duels. Henry Graf and Lasse Lührs were among the other German athletes who wanted to show off their unsportsmanlike skills.

As part of the event, the major event led to significant road closures in Hamburg. The police recommended avoiding the city center as much as possible, which of course caused some inconvenience for the spectators, who still wanted to take the opportunity to support the athletes.

Livestream and broadcast

Triathlon fans were also able to watch the events from the comfort of their own home. Live streams were available both on ARD and on special platforms such as triathlonlive.tv. Spectators could look forward to an exciting mixed relay on Sunday, which began at 1:50 p.m. Anyone who had a subscription to triathlonlive.tv also received exclusive content from the incredibly exciting world of triathlon.

In the preliminary reporting, the World Cup series was highlighted not only as a valuable opportunity for professional athletes to prepare for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris. ZDF also announced a comprehensive broadcast of the junior races and the elite competitions, which were offered on Saturday and Sunday via the streaming service.

The World Triathlon Championship Series has shown that it is not only the highlight of sporting events in Hamburg, but also serves as an excellent training opportunity for athletes before the big Olympics. Even though the German athletes disappointed this year, the audience remains optimistic for the next opportunity.
