Over 1,800 Hamburg children are happy to receive school bags as gifts!
Around 1,800 happy children from Hamburg can look forward to a free school bag just in time for the start of the new school year. The “Fair Start to School for All Children” initiative has opened its doors for the tenth time this year. The aim of the campaign is to support families with low incomes in particular. “There’s something going on,” says Claudia Meister from Hanseatic Help, who is happy about the smiling faces of the children who were able to receive their new school bags. The first satchels were handed out at the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund in Wandsbek on Thursday, and several hundred more are waiting in the Hanseatic Help warehouses for the next distribution.
The school bags that are distributed as part of this valuable campaign are used and lovingly packed. They contain everything you need to start school: folders, pens, ink boxes, pads, scissors, drinking bottles, lunch boxes, sports bags and even a voucher for the Hamburg library. The collected school bags are also distributed to non-profit organizations such as Hamburger Tafel, so that many more children can benefit from this campaign. In the rest of the country, more and more children are officially starting school - around 16,867 first graders started school in Hamburg this month.
A strong sign of equal opportunities
The campaign receives important support from Budnian Hilfe e.V., which is also providing 5,000 euros for new school supplies this year. The campaign will be further strengthened in close cooperation with other partners, such as the Hamburg Rotary Clubs. Since its founding in 2016, this school bag collection campaign has been one of the largest of its kind in Hamburg. Families with an average cost of around 250 euros for a new school bag can look forward to the support of this initiative. In addition, donors who would like to contribute some of the equipment can drop off used school bags and new school supplies at budni branches.
For the Kinderglück Foundation, which is also involved, the values of pride and belonging are top priority when starting school. Bernd Krispin, the founder of this foundation, emphasizes the great importance of this initiative in the fight against educational poverty and exclusion. “We want all children to have the same experience on the first day of school.” This philosophy is supported by our volunteers, who work tirelessly in planning and organizing to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
With a variety of social institutions, including daycare centers, elementary schools and youth welfare agencies, the foundation can exert a far-reaching influence. In total, more than 10 tons of school supplies are moved through the various initiatives and campaigns, which is a clear sign of the continued need for support. The high level of response shows that help will continue to be necessary in the future.
Of course, all campaigns are financed through donations and voluntary work. Because as we all know: together we make things easier! In recent years, 12,000 school starters have benefited from this commitment. The picture in Hamburg is becoming lively and colorful due to the increasing number of students, and it is more important than ever to advocate for equal opportunities.
