Redesign of the Kanalplatz: Transport transition in Harburg begins!

The reconstruction of the intersection at Kanalplatz in Harburger Schlossstrasse is now in the starting blocks. The first construction work will begin on June 23rd and is expected to last until mid-September 2025. During this time, Kanalplatz street will be set up as a one-way street, leading from Blohmstraße towards Schellerdamm. In addition, Harburger Schlossstrasse will be closed up to number 35 and converted into a dead end - there is no option to turn around in this section. The diversion for traffic heading west is via Schellerdamm, Karnapp and Blohmstrasse. However, pedestrians and cyclists can be guided safely through the construction site, which is guaranteed as part of this construction project. The Authority for Transport and Mobility Transition in Hamburg reports this at Hamburg.de.

In the second construction phase, which is expected to take place from mid-September to mid-November 2025, the construction site will be relocated to the northern junction area of the intersection. The one-way street on Kanalplatz Street remains in place, but Harburger Schlossstraße can then be used again. The aim of this extensive renovation work is to transform it into a roundabout. To this end, the intersection area will be comprehensively renovated, central islands will be created and pedestrian crossings will be set up. These measures are also intended to better connect the ancillary areas to the existing cycle route 10.
