Unknown man harasses woman in Marienthal – police are looking for witnesses!

On the night of June 15, 2025, an alarming incident occurred in the Marienthal district of Hamburg, alarming the local population. A 26-year-old woman was harassed by an unknown man after she got off a bus with him at the “Osterkamp” stop. The incident took place around 2:55 a.m. when the unknown perpetrator followed the woman through a cul-de-sac.

During this persecution, the perpetrator performed sexual acts on himself and then held the woman down, touching her inappropriately. This happened after the woman urged him to leave her alone. In a brave attempt to draw attention to herself, the woman screamed loudly for help, which eventually caused the perpetrator to flee. According to the police, the man ran towards the hospital along Rodigallee.

Perpetrator search and description

The search was launched immediately, but so far the perpetrator has remained on the run. The police gave a description of the unknown person: He is said to be between 30 and 35 years old, around 175 to 180 cm tall and of Southeast European origin. His short, dark hair and full beard were striking. The man was wearing a light T-shirt, a dark sweat jacket and dark long pants. The investigation is being carried out by the specialist service for sexual crimes, and the Hamburg police are asking for information from witnesses by calling 040/4286-56789 or at any police station.

Background to sexual crimes

This incident falls into a worrying trend. In Germany, the number of documented sexual crimes has been increasing for years. According to statistics, a peak of around 128,000 cases was reached in 2024. One reason for this increase could be greater sensitivity and willingness to report among the population. However, many victims are often too traumatized or intimidated to report incidents. The number of unreported cases is therefore estimated to be high, which shows that many crimes still remain undetected.

Women are particularly affected by sexual violence: around 91 percent of victims of sexual crimes are female, with women accounting for around 94 percent of rape cases. It is important to sensitize society to this issue and to question traditional thought patterns. Overall, this incident highlights the need to think about preventive measures and promote security awareness so that such offenses can be prevented in the future.

The police continue to rely on tips from anyone who has information about the incident or the perpetrator. Conversation and sharing experiences are essential to tackling the problem of sexual harassment.
