Last trip to the sea: Gertrud's farewell on the North Sea touches everyone

The North Sea has a special meaning for many people, and for older people it can be a place of longing and memories at the same time. Gertrud, 85 years old, is one of these people. She has visited the North Sea many times and is now planning to travel to the spa town of Cuxhaven one last time. The “Wish Car” from the Lower Saxony Workers’ Samaritan Association (ASB) will take them there, accompanied by their dedicated helpers Angela and Melli. Gertrud sets off in a pink hat and light blue puffer jacket while the two women help her make this special day an unforgettable experience.

When she arrives at the Cuxhaven beach, Gertrud is overcome by a wave of longing. But the happy mood quickly changes when her family realizes that this will be their last visit to this place together. Tears flow and despite the sadness, they decide to enjoy the day to the fullest. The first stop is the beach promenade, where Angela gets active: she fetches water from the North Sea and places it gently on Gertrud's hands. There is also carrot soup and a delicious ice cream to sweeten it - the simple joys in life prove to be the most valuable.

A farewell with symbolism

A very special surprise awaits Gertrud: an engraved “love lock” that touches her emotionally. Touched by the attention, she hugs her “Wish Car” crew, knowing that this day will be one of her most treasured memories. As the crowning finale, Gertrud attaches the lock and throws the key into the sea - a symbolic farewell to the North Sea and her previous life.

But Gertrud's story is not the only one that tells of people's wishes. Ulla from the Hanover region, who is seriously ill in the hospice, also has the wish to see the sea one last time. On April 24th, the “Angels of the Wishing Cart” will fulfill this heartfelt wish. Accompanied by her son and a best friend, she travels to Cuxhaven, where she looks at the water at the “Alte Liebe”. A ride on the beach tram and a walk along the promenade are also on the program. Her wish at the end: Finkenwerder style plaice fillet - a culinary delight that she shares with her loved ones before heading back to the Hanover region, laden with wonderful memories.

Wish car – a project close to the heart

And that's not all: Rosi, a palliative care patient from the Hanover region, also wants to go to the sea. They go to Cuxhaven-Sahlenburg in the wish car. Here she can watch horse-drawn carriages in the Wadden Sea and even pet a horse, which gives her emotional moments. A trip with a beach buggy to the mudflats and the enjoyment of fresh crabs in a restaurant round off your trip. Before she returns to the hospice, she receives a plush pony from the ASB employees - a small souvenir of a day full of moments of happiness.

The stories impressively show how important such last wishes are and how the “Wish Cart” helps to give people moments of happiness and fulfillment. It's not just excursions; They are touching farewells and a life that has once again blossomed colorfully. May many more wishes come true!
