Last wish by the sea: Haike's moving journey to the Baltic Sea
June 17, 2025 brought about a very special event in Grömitz. On this day, the ASB Wish Car of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund fulfills one of Haike's last wishes, who, despite being seriously ill and suffering from ALS, wanted to breathe in the fresh sea air of the Baltic Sea. With her partner Georg and a dedicated team, they set off to a place that makes their hearts beat faster - the coast of the Baltic Sea, which shows off its best side on this beautiful day.
The mild temperature and the bright sky are essential because Haike's illness makes every little break a precious moment. However, the group still needs to be prepared for the challenge that access to the water is not barrier-free. Haike, who can only communicate with one eye, longingly awaits the sea, even if she cannot see it directly. But it's not just the waves she wants to feel - it's the memories and feelings associated with her final wish.
An unforgettable day
Numerous medical devices are necessary on their journey to Grömitz, including ventilators and a special wheelchair. Although Haike's strength dwindles during the trip, she radiates a joy that pains the nurse Sandy. Haike is “happier than she has been in a long time,” she remarks as the group moves onto the promenade. There she discovers a bright pink sweater that is given to her, along with a matching jacket. It's these small gestures that make Haike's day unforgettable.
A stopover at the beach hall ensures that the group recharges their batteries. The combination of fresh breeze, the smell of the sea and community makes every moment meaningful. The memories they made that day will certainly live on in the hearts of Haike and Georg.
The concept of the wish car
The Wish Car is a unique project that has existed since 2014 and fulfills the wishes of seriously ill people. Originally launched by the ASB, the volunteers have made it their mission to support people in the last phase of their lives in a special way. Examples like that of Karin, who went on a weekend trip to the Baltic Sea with her family, show the importance of such experiences. She also experienced very special moments, despite the unsettled weather, which ultimately didn't dampen the mood.
The family enjoyed the wide sea on their journey, and the large teddy bear that Karin held symbolized the support and support she received from the Samaritans. Their experiences were well received on social media and reflected the dedication of supporters. The positive feedback underlined how valuable such trips are.
Supporting the wish car project plays a central role, which is secured through donations. Particularly practical: It is no longer necessary to send receipts for donations of up to 300 euros, as booking confirmations are sufficient and thus offer everyone the opportunity to support this heartwarming project. Further information can be found on the Wish Car website.
This initiative impressively shows how commitment and compassion can create rays of hope even in the most difficult times. We can only hope that many more wishes can come true.
