Last wish fulfilled: Jens and family experience an unforgettable day on the Baltic Sea
Pleasant memories and last wishes – that’s what the Wish Car makes possible. Religious topics, a bit of freedom and precious time with loved ones are the most important things for many people when it comes to spending their last days meaningfully. An example of this is Jens, who sets off to the Baltic Sea with his family to fulfill his last wish.
Jens is a passionate camper and has visited the most beautiful places on the Baltic Sea for almost five decades. But now a serious illness has tripped him up and he can no longer travel without support. The wish car makes it possible for him to fulfill his heart's desire and spend an unforgettable day on the Baltic Sea with his wife Leni, his sons Jens junior and Dirk, and daughter-in-law Silke. The hospice companions ensure that everything runs smoothly and support the family on their journey. As moin.de reports, they meet old friends at the campsite, which creates additional emotional moments.
A barbecue evening in Altwarp
Not far from Jens' experiences, we find Hansi, who has also embarked on an important journey. Hansi is also terminally ill and wants to visit his brother on the Baltic Sea. The volunteers from the ASB-Wünschewagen support him in covering the 400 kilometer route to Altwarp. The original plan was to visit Zinnowitz, but the barrier-free accommodation in Altwarp turned out to be the better choice for Hansi, who was in need of care. When he arrived at his brother and his wife's house, this emotional day was rounded off with a barbecue evening on the terrace with a view of the harbor, in complete contrast to the originally planned vespers. This is what the colleagues from thueringen24.de report.
The following day Hansi went to the Baltic Sea island of Usedom. Despite the harsh weather, he was able to enjoy a fish sandwich with his brother as they shared memories and said goodbye. Like Jens and his family, Hansi spent valuable hours with his loved ones, which shows how important such moments are, especially in difficult times.
The mission of the wish wagons
The wish car of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) is a real lifesaver for many seriously ill people. Many of them have unfulfilled heartfelt desires, be it a final visit to the sea or a reunion with beloved family members. Fulfilling these wishes is often difficult, be it due to organizational, health or financial hurdles. The ASB started the project “Wünschewagen – Dare to make your last wishes” in 2014, which is now active in many regions of Germany. The first wishing car was introduced in the ASB Ruhr regional association in Essen and has since spread rapidly, as guteideen.org shows that there are already 23 wishing cars nationwide.
The trips are free of charge for those affected and a companion, and the organization works unbureaucratically in order to fulfill even short-term requests. The volunteers, most of whom have medical or nursing qualifications, are the heart of this project. The vehicles are equipped with panoramic windows and a music system to ensure a comfortable journey for the drivers and their companions.
Overall, it shows that the dream car is much more than just a means of transport. It offers people in their final stages of life the opportunity to relive something and connect with their loved ones. Now Jens and his family are returning to the hospice after a beautiful day full of memories, love and gratitude - tired but happy.
