Protest against right-wing extremists in Anklam: Citizens for human rights!
On June 14, 2025, the city of Anklam became the scene of an urgent protest. Around 30 people gathered on Pasewalker Straße to demonstrate against a meeting of right-wing extremist groups in the “Haus Jugendstil”. The protesters held up placards with encouraging slogans such as “human rights” and “those who sleep in democracy wake up in dictatorship”. This commitment is part of a broader vigilance against right-wing extremist tendencies in the region, as emphasized by the “Greifswald for All” alliance, which called for this action. SPD politician Erik von Malottki was also there and expressed concern that the participants in the meeting were dangerous.
The meeting of right-wing extremists was originally planned to take place in Eschede, Lower Saxony, but the organizers decided on Anklam. According to the police report, the meeting actually took place, but was peaceful and without any significant incidents. Police forces were present to monitor the situation, while Saturday morning remained unremarkable for most Anklam residents.
Protests and explosive backgrounds
This demonstration is not the only one in the region, although it may be the most recent. According to current reporting, there is a lively exchange throughout the Vorpommern-Greifswald district, with more than 30 demonstrations registered. Tensions range from neighbors to larger cities like Greifswald, where the largest protests against the traffic light coalition's policies are taking place. Especially in Anklam, the stage organized by the alliance was less full than the 250 expected participants; in the end only up to 100 people came. Nevertheless, the warning of infiltration by right-wing extremists could not be dismissed, and many citizens are skeptical about the political direction that some groups are taking.
In recent years, the right-wing extremist NPD, which is considered the oldest right-wing extremist party in the Federal Republic of Germany, has built up its influence in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in detail. The party openly represents xenophobic, racist and anti-Semitic views. Their ideology even has parallels to National Socialism, making them particularly alarming to the community. As the Office for the Protection of the Constitution describes it, the NPD is still being closely monitored because it represents a critical threat to the democratic order. Ultimately, the question remains how citizens can respond to such extreme movements in order to protect their values and rights.
While some passers-by were surprised by the protests and reported being unaware of what was happening, the presence of such extremist events remains a challenge that cannot be ignored. Initiatives such as “Greifswald for all” highlight the need to recognize alarm signals and act. When a breath of fresh air blows in the region, it helps to keep your ears open and listen to the voice of civil society to strengthen cohesion and counter extremism.
In summary, it is crucial for democracy to remain vigilant and take a clear stance against any form of extremism. Yesterday in Anklam is synonymous with the ongoing fight for human rights values, which could also be at risk in the future.
