Construction of the Windanker wind farm begins: Green energy for 300,000 households!

Things are now really getting down to business in the Western Pomeranian Baltic Sea! How NDR reports, Iberdrola has started construction of the “Windanker” offshore wind farm off Rügen. With an investment volume of around 3.5 billion euros, this wind farm will be an important part of the Baltic Hub, an impressive group of wind farms planned northeast of Rügen.

The foundation stone – or rather, the first pile foundation – has already been laid. The first monopile foundation measures an impressive 84 meters in length and weighs 2,100 tons. These foundations were made in Spain, in collaboration with Navantia Seanergies and Windar Renovables. The Dutch company Van Oord will take care of their installation.

Powerful and reliable

“Windanker” will provide a total output of 315 megawatts. This will provide around 315,000 households with climate-friendly electricity from the end of 2026. In total, the three wind farms in the Baltic Hub, including Wikinger and Baltic Eagle, will achieve a deliverable output of over 1.1 gigawatts, capable of providing green electricity to more than 1.1 million households annually.

The planned total output of the Baltic Hub is an impressive 1.1 gigawatts, with “Windanker” providing almost a third of this output. Wind power expansion is also in full swing in the German Baltic Sea - so far wind turbines with a total output of 1.8 gigawatts have been installed here, while in the North Sea there are already 7.4 gigawatts. Other major projects planned in the Baltic Sea include “OstSee Energies” off Rügen and “Gennaker” north of the Darß peninsula.

International commitment

Since December 2024, the partner structure for “Windanker” has included the Japanese company Kansai, which holds 49 percent of the shares, while Iberdrola owns the remaining 51 percent. The wind farm will be equipped with 21 Siemens Gamesa turbines of the SG 14-236 DD type, with each turbine having an output of 15 MW.

“Windaker” is Iberdrola’s third wind farm in the German Baltic Sea, after the Wikinger and Baltic Eagle projects. “Windanker” is scheduled to be completed in 2026, and one can safely say: it will become greener in the region!

These gradual developments show once again that the energy transition is not just a buzzword, but an exciting reality. The commitment of Iberdrola and its partners promises not only environmentally friendly energy, but also progress for the region. A real benefit for the community!
