Car rams pregnant e-scooter driver after argument in Bergen!
In Bergen auf Rügen there was a serious incident on October 29th in which a pregnant e-scooter driver (24 years old) was hit by a car. The accident occurred around 3:45 p.m. on Feldstrasse after a conflict had previously arisen between the e-scooter driver and the driver (32 years old). As the Ostsee-Zeitung reports, the driver of a VW turned around and raced along the sidewalk at excessive speed after she was shown a disrespectful gesture by the e-scooter driver.
The impact caused the 24-year-old to fall, who fortunately only sustained minor injuries. She is pregnant and was taken to the hospital as a precaution. The material damage is estimated at around 2000 euros. The police have initiated an investigation against the 32-year-old for grievous bodily harm and dangerous interference with road traffic. The e-scooter driver is also being investigated – she is suspected of insulting her.
More and more e-scooter accidents
This incident increases the discussion about road safety, especially in connection with the use of e-scooters. Since their approval in Germany in 2019, e-scooters have become a popular means of transport, but also a nuisance in traffic. According to the Tagesschau, the number of injuries and deaths from e-scooter accidents rose rapidly in 2024. Almost 12,000 accidents were registered, which corresponds to an increase of 27% compared to the previous year. Young people are particularly affected, often under the influence of alcohol.
Statistics show that over 50% of accidents involving e-scooter drivers are related to other road users, mostly cars. One of the most common causes of accidents is incorrect use of roadways or sidewalks, which is responsible in 21% of cases. More than half of the e-scooter riders involved in accidents are under 45 years old, while only around 3% are 65 years old or older. These numbers indicate a certain need for action.
A dangerous mix
The dangers associated with the use of e-scooters are compounded by the increasing number of riders, who often ride without helmets and on sidewalks. With almost 30% more e-scooters on the roads in 2023, the risks of accidents have increased significantly. In particular, users of rental scooters, who are often younger, cause accidents more often and are generally less experienced in using these vehicles.
The incident in Bergen auf Rügen once again brings to the table the complex problems surrounding e-scooters and their use. It remains to be hoped that targeted educational work and safety measures can prevent such dangerous incidents in the future.
