Convertible driver in court: student intentionally hit!

A shocking incident occurred on the picturesque Baltic Sea island of Rügen, which is now occupying the attention of the judiciary. Exactly ten months ago, on August 14, 2024, a 13-year-old student from Bremen was in mortal danger during his school trip. What had happened? The student was on the way to a supermarket with his classmates when a serious incident occurred with a 47-year-old driver who was driving his convertible on the road. According to Süddeutsche Zeitung, the driver is now being tried before the Bergen District Court for intentionally endangering and dangerous Traffic interference charged.

The student gave the driver the middle finger, which provoked him. The defendant turned his vehicle around and drove head-on into the student at around 25 km/h, who was then thrown several meters through the air. Despite his serious injuries, which included a traumatic brain injury, the 14-year-old, who is now appearing as a co-plaintiff in the trial, was able to get back to the youth hostel. He was later flown by helicopter to the Greifswald University Hospital, where his condition stabilized. The defendant, an entrepreneur and father of five, emphasizes that he never wanted to harm anyone and describes the incident as a “catastrophe”.

The trial and the witnesses

On the first day of the trial, around a dozen witnesses were heard, including classmates of the injured party. These provided different reports about the exact sequence of events. The defendant himself took another look at the immediacy of the incident: after the collision, he left the scene of the accident without informing the police. According to the defense attorney, it was a “tragic accident,” which caused heated discussions among those present. The court also criticized the difficulties in precisely determining what happened to the accident.

The situation is made particularly explosive by the fact that the defendant's vehicle was confiscated on September 5th as part of a house search. The driver's lawyer explained that the car was taken to the garage on the advice of another lawyer to refute another allegation.

Statistical insights and causes

In order to be able to assess the scope of the case, the current statistics on traffic violations are also worth mentioning. According to KBA, over 32,850 cases of hit-and-run were registered in Germany alone in 2024. Such incidents not only have consequences for those directly affected, but also cause a general loss of trust in road traffic. Considering the figures, it becomes clear that such offenses should not be underestimated and endanger the safety of all road users.

The next day of trial in the convertible driver's case will take place next Monday. Then not only the defendant but also a technical expert is questioned about the events. Both the pleas and the verdict are still pending - the entire region is excited to see what the court will decide.
