Weather warning in Western Pomerania: Frost and slippery conditions are threatening tonight!

Winter is getting serious in Western Pomerania-Rügen. Today, January 14, 2026, the German Weather Service (DWD) warns of frost and slippery conditions, and the region could become a risk for traffic. This warning was issued at 1:34 p.m. and is in effect until early Friday morning.

Temperatures between 0 °C and -2 °C are expected during the night from Thursday to Friday. Numerous communities are particularly affected, including Ahrenshagen-D. and Stralsund. The DWD strongly recommends frost protection measures to avoid damage and accidents. The full list of places affected by the frost warning includes Binz, Putbus and Wiek. This variety of locations underlines that all road users should be particularly careful.

Dangers from black ice

As NDR reports, the “Tief Gunda” weather phenomenon is also causing slippery roads in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. After a period of permanent frost, the ground is frozen. When rain falls in the morning, it freezes immediately and creates dangerous lightning ice, especially in areas with little snow. Western Pomerania is at the center of this weather situation, and drivers and pedestrians should be extremely careful.

The Ludwigslust-Parchim transport company has resumed its scheduled services from 10 a.m. with reservations, while several emergency services have already been deployed due to slippery conditions in Greifswald. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries. The police have also reported a quiet night so far with no significant incidents.

Frost and further weather developments

The official severe weather warning for freezing rain is valid until midday. Aftereffects of the frost are also to be expected in our region. Throughout northeastern Germany, such as from the Müritz to the Uckermark, it can become slippery in places as frozen areas remain.

The DWD has announced for Thursday night that stiff to stormy gusts are expected in the peaks of the low mountain ranges. In addition, dense fog could severely limit visibility in regions, which poses additional challenges for all road users. A further update is expected no later than 9:00 p.m.

In order to be safe on the road during this frosty period, it is advisable to always keep an eye on road conditions and follow current weather warnings. If you follow the advice from the DWD and the transport companies, you can hopefully get through these wintry days without any accidents.

Stay informed and careful! These winter conditions require a lot of caution and adaptation from everyone.
